The African American Arts and Cultural Complex is proud to present the works of internationally renowned artist Malik Seneferu. Entitled “Home Coming “this exhibition showcases several of Seneferu’s explorations into art making. Mostly known for his paintings this exhibition concentrates on Seneferu’s ballpoint pen drawings and miniature hand carved sculptures made from ivory soap and wood.
Malik Seneferu is an alchemist; concerned with transformations of the various materials he collects. Patience, meditation, and observation are essential to his process. Seneferu’s work establishes a link between cultural memory, play, visuality and narrative. To experience Seneferu’s sculptural works is to dive into a density of meaning derived through carefully cultivated juxtapositions. Electric blue lipstick, fluorescent purples, and canary yellows dance atop miniature hand carved sculptures that are reminiscent of West African ceremonial masks. Each mask is uniquely endowed with a sense of intimacy that speaks to Seneferu’s ability to collapse time and place.
The same fragile, intimate and transformative features found in Seneferu’s sculptures are also found within his highly rendered ballpoint pen drawings. The human form merges with the natural world, limbs become branches, hair and leaves are one and the same. Seneferu’s ability to imagine and recall the most minute details lends theses drawings their greatest strengths.
