Location: African American Art and Culture Complex 762 Fulton St, San Francisco, California 94102
Headliners M1 of dead prez and Afrobeat sensation Sistah Iminah Ahmad and hosts Kali and Katera of the San Francisco Black Film Festival join the San Francisco Bay View Newspaper and Block Report Radio for our third annual Black Media Appreciation Night, presenting awards to a few of the brave, bright Black media-makers who speak up for us to an often hostile world.
This year we honor Black Lives Matter co-founder and Bay Area homegirl Alicia Garza, physician-scientist-journalist Dr. Ahimsa Porter Sumchai, Pan African musician-poet-broadcaster Avotcja Jiltonilro, Sun Reporter publisher Amelia Ashley-Ward, publicist Jackie Wright, KPOO and KPFA broadcaster Safi wa Nairobi and yes, some men too: rapper, now political rapper Mac Mall, Let’s Talk Sports Nation TV host Jameel Rasheed Patterson, the late KPFA Side Show broadcaster Wesley Burton and the internationally celebrated voice of oppressed people everywhere Mutulu Olugbala, better known as M1.
All that’s missing is YOU! Black Media Appreciation Night is Saturday, Sept. 12, beginning at 6 p.m. with a champagne reception and 83rd birthday party for Bay View publisher Willie Ratcliff. The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are only $25 at Eventbrite, http://www.eventbrite.com/e/black-media-appreciation-night-tickets-18155070304?aff=es2. We can’t wait to see you there!
